COMMON FURNITURE BEETLE (Anobium punctatum):
Despite its name, the Common Furniture Beetle can cause major structural problems to buildings and homes. It is by far the most common type of woodworm in the UK. An attack can be identified by tiny, circular holes on the surface of the wood (1.4-2 mm diameter) and the dust shards that are left behind, which feel coarse to the touch.
Like the House Longhorn Beetle, which has long, antennae-like horns that poke out from the sides of its head, the adult Furniture Beetle can be identified by its distinct physical characteristics. Its oddly-shaped thorax creates the appearance of wearing a hooded jacket.
To remedy the problem, all affected surfaces must be chemically treated by a professional. Weakened timber must be replaced.
DEATH WATCH BEETLE (Xestobium rufuvillosum)
The Death Watch Beetle is common in old houses. Wood boring damage starts at the larva stage and can last as long as two or three years, especially in wood with fungal decay. The female can lay up to 60 eggs in one litter!
An attack can be identified by the clicking sound made by the insect when it grinds its jaws or head against the sides of the wooden tunnel while it bores. Superstition says that you hear this sound when someone is ill or on the verge of death.
The adult lengths of these beetles are controlled by their environment and can vary dramatically, from 1.1 to 11 millimeters. Like the Wood Boring Weevil, they have a reddish-brown or black exoskeleton.

Considering the snow we have had over the past few days they seem to more and more ants around so I thought I would give you some top tips from keeping them out of your house
- This time of year food is hard to come by for ants so make sure your kitchen is clean and tidy
- If you have children make sure there not dropping sweets around the house
- If you see ants don’t put ant powder down as all this will do is make them avoid the powder
- Make sure you research what Manchester ants you have, if not and you try to kill them yourself the ant nests my split causing you more trouble
- Boiling water or bleach wont control them
