Using a Patterdale Terrier for Pest Control

The Patterdale Terrier, also known as the Black Fell Terrier, is a small breed of dog that was originally bred for pest control and hunting. Patterdale Terriers are lively working dogs and have been a great asset to pest control specialists in areas such as Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester and Cheshire.

The Patterdale Terrier is not an officially recognized breed in the AKC, but is very popular among breeders that use dogs for pest control. They are relatively small dogs that average about 12 inches in height and typically weigh around 13 pounds. Fell Terriers are usually black in colour, but their coats may also be red, liver or black and tan.

This breed is considered a high energy breed, which is one of the qualifications of a great working dog. The Patterdale Terrier can be somewhat difficult to train, since it is known for its short attention span. However, once the dog is trained, it makes an excellent ratting dog. They love to dig, so chasing after rats and digging them out of their holes is naturally one of their favourite activities.

Due to their high prey-drive instincts, the Fell Terrier is not recommended as an average family pet. They have a tendency to chase after other pets, like cats, and once running, are difficult to call back. Their love of digging leads to problems with keeping the dog inside the yard, since they can easily dig under a fence and escape. They are loyal, lovable and eager to please, but a typical dog owner that is not familiar with the breed may lose patience with the dog’s high energy level very quickly.

Physically caring for a Fell Terrier is fairly easy due to their short coat. They just need to be brushed every couple of days. They can be bathed in a matter of minutes, which makes clean-up fairly quick when the dog becomes covered in dirt from digging pests out of their underground burrows.

Patterdale Terriers are especially effective in controlling vermin in the Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester and Cheshire areas. These working dogs help keep the pest population under control in these areas as well as many others.
