There are currently more than 8000 species of ant known to man. Different species of ants construct and maintain their colonies in a variety of ways. Species also hunt for food in different ways and may store their food distinctively. Most species spend their time scavenging from waste material; however, some species need to be eradicated and controlled. The Pharaoh’s Ant (Monomorium Pharaonis) can be problematic and once introduced into properties/premises can virtually impossible to remove. The Black Garden Ant (Laisus Niger), which is generally inhabited outdoor areas can be found in properties in search of sweet food sources.
The worker ants of both aforementioned species are a significant problem when searching for a food source or water down a trail. Both species feast on most foodstuffs; with the Pharaoh’s ant having a particular fondness for meat, cheese, and fats, whilst the Black Garden Ant preferring sweeter food sources.
Pharaoh ants also have a predisposition to infest hospitals and begin feeding on blood and bodily excretions. Furthermore, they commonly gnaw on the packaging and have even been known to bite children. They are a disturbing pest that poses a significant threat to human health and must, therefore, be controlled.
Black ants congregate around sweet food sources inside of properties but are a problem outside too. They remove the soil, which dries it out and makes it less fertile. They also assist in the growth of greenfly by feeding on their sweet secretions.
Anatomy of the Ant
Essentially, the body is divided into three main sections: head, thorax, and abdomen. These segmented body parts are joined by extremely narrow waists. All ants possess antennae that are joined by an elbow-like appendage. Pharaoh ants possess strong mandibles and fore wings that are attached to hind wings. Worker ants are 2mm long with a distinctive yellow/brown coloration. Whereas males are 3mm long, have wings, but do not fly. The Black worker ants are longer than counterparts and can grow to 5mm in length.
